Rockwall gets its name from a geological mystery. When the first settlers arrived in 1851, they tried to dig wells but discovered underground rock walls. The walls appeared man-made, and the settlers assumed they were barriers built during ancient times. Today, geologists believe the walls are a result of weather sand dikes formed along the Balcones Fault Line. Evidence of these rock walls can still be seen in several places throughout the county.
